My great-aunt had a mimosa tree in her yard, so wanting a mimosa is a sentimental thing for me.
I looked it up yesterday and found you can start a new mimosa tree from cuttings - has anyone done this?

My mother used to say mimosas were little more than huge weeds. I think she was right. Although they have an attractive shape and those pink flowers, they constantly leave a huge mess all over the ground. I wouldn't have one in my yard. You can find a lot of info by googling "mimosa trees pros and cons".

I saw the most BEAUTIFUL mimosa tree on my walk yesterday! It was in full bloom with the pink flower buds. It had a lovely shape to it! Must have been very old. I have a Mimosa in my yard I planted about 15 years ago..... and it is huge, but it never took a lovely shape like the one I saw on my walk.
I did not know you could make a tree from cuttings... will be curious to what others have to say as I would love to plant another one in my yard. You can also take the pods that they produce with seeds inside, and grow one from the seeds... here is a good explaination of how to do that:

I have always loved mimosa trees - they smell heavenly and look ethereal. I tried unsuccessfully to start one from a seed pod so a couple of years I broke down and purchased one from a nursery. I love it and it is flourishing! I do agree though, I think they are a kind of weed - albeit a pretty one! Good luck!

I think the beauty of a Mimosa tree is well worth the mess it makes. We used to live in the country and a lot of homes in the area had the Mimosas in their yard and it was so pretty when they were all in bloom.
I've never started a tree from cuttings so I'm no help with that. Hope you enjoy the process of starting your own Mimosa.

I have Mimosa in my yard and it is beautiful. I love it. It is in full bloom and smells wonderful so I don't care about the flowers falling on the ground. My neighbor gave me a start of his and it was about 12 inches tall. We planted it and put a coffee can around it so the rabbits would leave it alone or we would not mow it down accidentally, until it got bigger. It is huge now and blooms very well. I have Mimosa tree starts all over my yard about a foot to two foot tall. We pull them out but they sprout up every year here and there. So yes, the answer is you can grow one off of a start.

over 45 years ago when we bought our current home, there was a huge mimosa tree. We ended up taking it down after a large limb came down. Even now, we will see a seedling from that tree growing in the oddest places.
As we drive around, if someone has a mimosa it stands out because they have become dare here. I don't know if the landscape / nurseries have them since " weed " can be used to describe some of their habits.

The tree is desired by some because it blooms in the summer. The tree constantly throws off viable seedlings and for those who hate to weed, it keeps a person very busy.
Here where I am, it is a short lived tree because they are being killed by a fungal disease. It would be a much better tree, if it didn't throw off so many live seedlings.
I've heard that people who have them in TX. consider them 'weed' trees.
There are so many better trees available for homeowners.

I love mimosas! I used to climb them as a kid because the trunk is so smooth. I made necklaces out of the seeds and loved the way the flowers smelled. I wasn't having to do the yard cleanup then though. I'm from Texas and they remind me of home ![]()

My daughter has mimosa trees in her back yard.
They grow beautifully at the beach, pure sand, no grass. So cleanup is raking a little bit.
But they are stunning. Her's reminds me of a huge bonsai tree because of the shape. Heavenly scent day and night.
She brings out decorative pillows for her patio seating to compliment the tree when it's flowering.
She does the same when the lilacs are in bloom, too. She *borrowed* that idea from me!
