Sky Pencil Holly Overview

Does anyone have these holly bushes? We put two in and was wondering the best way to take care of them. Thanks

I have some.  Give it Hollytone once a year.  Water it on occasion when it gets very dry.  They grow to about 10 feet, so I prune them so they don't get that tall.  They are planted in the sun.  Other than that they have been very hardy.  Live in zone 6.

@VenturaHighway  I've not heard of them before. I just googled them and there is a lot of care instructions listed.

I have six Sky Pencils.  I have had one for over 18 years.  It was about a foot tall when I bought it and it must now be about 18 feet tall -- it is spectacular and a showstopper!  I have two in large planters and the others are in the ground.  I never prune them and no special care.  Some are in full sun, others in part sun.  I water them when I do my regular watering.  I am in zone 7.

@VenturaHighway  Just leave adequate spacing (of the mature width) & treat as any holly -- acid loving fertilizer & a sunny area.

We have 2 sky pencils. They are on either side of our front steps near the house. We have had them maybe 6 years. My husband gives them a buzz cut across the top to make them even and from growing too tall. We also will clip off any shoots that are sticking out on the side. We live in New England and tie string around them to keep them straight in the winter so snow doesn't pack inside them and break them down. Not too tight just tight enough to hold it together. During dry weeks in the summer our front shrubbery gets watered. I love them. When we planted them I hadn't seen them and now they have become popular. Good luck and I hope this helps.

I have owned 5 for about 6 years. Easy to take care of. After the last frost in the Spring I fertilize mine. I water them when it's really hot outside. I do keep them trimmed because they do get tall.  In the winter time I tied string around them because the snow would bend them down.
