I am slowing down on feeding now and only put out some in late afternoon or very early evening and we are usually sitting out then. So the hawks have to stay away. Have so many doves that come to eat too. They bring their young ones and they stay rather tame for awhile.
I have not had any problems with hawks eating the birds. I know Coopers hawks like go after feeder birds, but they say (whoever THEY are) that if you take the feeder down for a few days, the Coopers hawks will go and hunt elsewhere. We do have a mating pair that I see and hear flying overhead, and sometimes I'll see one sitting on the fence, but never going after the birds at the feeders. Very rarely I'll see a red-tail hawk flying around, but I guess I have too many trees around for them. I think they like more open areas.
