Provided the site is a good one for rhodos, look for a product called "Roots", and apply it according to directions.

 

Top dress with Espoma Plant Tone and (anyone's) greensand.

 

Yes, rhodos like acidic soil but the key is the airflow in the soil.  They are native to places in the forest where the leaf litter is rich and the shade is high.

 

Soil is key.  Drainage is key.
