Re: Recent deep freeze and shrub survival

I think the rhododendrons will be fine. They are always fine up in the mountains of NC & TN where ice covers much of the land in the winter. I am in a zone (coastal SC) where it's too hot for them so I don't know for sure but I do know they seem to be quite hardy. We had temps in the 20s a couple times in January, pretty rare for us. Some of my plants may have suffered but they always seem to come back when the springtime arrives. The most difficult part is not to cut off the damaged parts until I'm sure the frost possibility is gone. I cut some back a few years back when we had a freeze, they started putting out new shoots when we got into the 60s, then froze again and I lost all the new growth. Didn't lose the plants, but they were stunted for a year.

Re: Recent deep freeze and shrub survival

@Carolina925 , I am pretty sure the shrubs will survive.  We normally have very cold winters.  The buds are another story.  We have had such a mild winter that the shrubs were pushed into early Spring mode and then came the deep freeze.  Ouch!  LM

Re: Recent deep freeze and shrub survival

I'm in zone 9 and planted a drought tolerant Mediterranean garden.  It snowed over the weekend.  It never snows here. I'm watching the garden for signs of distress.  Lavender was blooming when it snowed and the flowers still look good, the new leaves on the roses seem fine but some of the purple lantana seems to be turning.  We have a lot of it for ground cover.  I hope it all comes through the cold.

@Wobin these big temperature swings are no friend to the garden.  I planted a lot of bulbs last year.  Hope they come through okay.

I have a lot of winter kill in my heathers.
