Questions about Amaryllis Bulbs?

I would like to plant some of these for Christmas. Some of the info I read says to plant 4-6 weeks before bloom is wanted, some sources say 8 weeks. I don't know. Also-where is the best place to buy the bulbs? I have some rose pots that I am thinking about using. They are 7" across at the top. My magazine says to try and find a bulb slightly smaller to the pot size. I don't think I can find them that large unless I pay $16-$18 a bulb. I am going to have to settle for something much smaller. Any amaryllis knowledge that anyone has will be helpful. Thank you!!
