I think you have a great idea!   I have found it doesn't take much care to cultivate a pumpkin.  I have always enjoyed lifting up the leaves of the vine and discovering something is growing beneath.

Maybe it's the area you live in, but I have found the prices where I'm at to be the same as last year. Walmart has the med. to lg. for $3.88 and DGD picked out a jumbo one for $9.98. That was her gift for helping Gma pick out ones to decorate my front porch. I paid $5.99 for white ones at Menards which is the same as in previous years. My striped  mini pumpkins/gourds were $1.00 ea. everywhere. Fall is the only season that I really go all out for my porch decorating.

We have grown them in our backyard in years past, but this year due to DH's surgery and rehab that was not possible.
