Well, the reality of this harsh winter is finally realized on our landscaping. 20 year old privets were showing only growth at the base so over the last few days we decided to do a "rejuvenation" pruning on the privets and lopped them all down to about 8-12" from the ground. The new growth at the base looks good, but I was wondering....

Anyone ever cut down privets to the base? I was curious how quickly they come back and if they did well surviving the following winter after such an extreme pruning.

It's called rejuvenative pruning-- cutting down to the bases of plants.

Figure 14.
Rejuvenation pruning involves cutting back the top of the plant to the ground. Thin the new shoots as they begin to grow to prevent excessive crowding.

Yep... that's exactly what we did not only to the privets but to my entire bed of lavender the hydrangea shrubs and a few of the spirea. At least the entire loss of shrubs/perennials were kept to only about 4 in total. Winter was not kind to my yard this year!
