Onions and Roses?

Yesterday I met a lady who came from Mexico City. She owned orchards and a ranch in California. Her true passion is roses. We were digging up my MIL's 24 year old rose tree, as we sold their home. She said to throw raw onions, cut up, around the rose trunk, slightly mixing in the top soil. It makes the roses fragrant!! Has anyone tried this?
