Thanks to all for your help.  I'm digesting the info justjazzmom sent and highlighting it for my gardener, who doesn't read long anything.  DH retired two years ago and has taken over my iris bed.  A balance probem makes leaning over precarious for me.  He did transplant some, maybe too deep, and our plow guy took out some last winter.  We have no pests here that attack the bulbs.  Ironically we do have some underground critter that ate all the beets last year.  That garden is way in back of the pole barn, maybe 300 feet away.  Fortunately our many deer haven't bothered them.
