If any help to you, I don't have a tree but I have several gardenia shrubs and a few mini gardenia shrubs.  All of them experience some yellowing leaves.  The yellow leaves will drop off.  New leaves will grow.  Gardenas are evergreen down here in the South, but they still shed old leaves just like any evergreen tree or shrub.  Hopefully your little tree will be just fine, but see if you can contact Philip on his facebook page or thru Q.

I tend to agree with @Kachina624 on this.  I think overfertilization might be the problem.

 

There isn't much to do but perhaps flush the soil with a lot of water, letting it drain thoroughly, and then wait for the plant to recover.  You do have new green growth so that's good.
