I have a profusion of mums at my front door. I put mine out in September and change them out once before Thanksgiving. I have never had any that survived the entire season.

Same here. By mid to late October some are bloomed out so I replace them. I think they look beautiful on the porch.

I have some that have been in the ground for at least 25 years.

Thank you one and all for the responses. Never did I think there would be so much help offered. I was asking about mums I have at my front doorway -- haven't put them into the ground yet. But based on all the advise I've received, today I saw small mum plants at Home Depot that were reduced to about $3 and I may just pick up a few plants for next year. I'm seriously thinking of keeping them in the cooler cellar, since I live in CT and don't think they'd thrive our winter. I'd also pinch back when necessary and plant outside at the first sign of spring.

Thank you all again.
