As usual, I over-planted one area in our yard about four years ago. Now there are three large bushes all bunched together. The one in the middle is the mock orange and I want to get it out and transplanted because it smells so good. I am having a guy come and move it for me and I am scared. Has anyone transplanted a mock orange with success? It's probably about 3x3 feet.

@pattypeep  When plants/trees are dormant is the right time to transplant.  Make sure the guy digs deep enough all around so that the roots won't be broken, and the new hole is twice as wide, at least, as the root system, and as deep.

@pattypeep@mousiegirl, I have a couple of things to move as well.  One is a gorgeous Crimson Queen Japanese Maple tree.  It is small but will grow wide.  Another is a Nine Bark Diablo.  I talked to my nursery and they say the same thing.  Do it when the tree and shrub are dormant.

Now all I have to do is negotiate placement with DH.  I will wait until we are finished cleaning out the basement🙂.  LM

@Lilysmom  I have three trees which were never planted, just set on top of the ground in wire baskets with the intention of planting.  They have rooted and grown very well, one is a Mock Orange, probably won't move this, one is a Lilac which will be moved after bloom in the Spring, and one is a Fig tree which I had intended to put into a large pot as it would only grow to ten feet.  It reached that height years ago, and produces wonderful figs.  It is still in the one gallon black pot but of course rooted into the ground through that, lol, amazes me.  this will definitely not be moved, but it is in a spot that I would not have imagined would work for it, but as it turns out, it works very well.

@mousiegirl, my gardening friend has a beautiful mock orange.  She calls me over every year to have a look when it blooms.

I can't wait to get back out in the garden.  Our grass is green now.  It has been very mild so far.  LM

@Lilysmom  My weeds are tall and green, lol.  No point in weeding until the rain stops.  Today and for the next few days, warmer, but more rain next week.  It has been very cold for months.

@Lilysmom I am so glad to read your post. The nine bark diablo is the bush in front of my mock orange and I absolutely could not remember what it was. When I went outside yesterday to assess my overgrown corner, I decided that the mock orange was probably too big to move, so I decided to sacrifice my diablo and cut the living tweedle out of it to make room for the mock. I will have the guys transplant it and see what happens. I love it's little flowers.

@pattypeep, the ninebarks are tough little shrubs.  I have mine in a good place but it is getting too crowded as well.  Time to give it the room to strut it's stuff!  LM

Re: Mock Orange Bush

[ Edited ]

Ninebarks are native to Long Island and the straight species can get 8' X  5'!

Cultivars like Diabolo get big (10' X 10') or Little Devil (4' X 4') good for smaller spaces.

Google 'ninebark varieties' for even smaller sized cultivars. It is gaining in popularity as a 4 season shrub.
