Susan, I watched this bear 402 bring her 3 spring cubs out 2 yrs ago, they are just as cute as can be arent they. Looks like 2 of them are runts this spring, 4 babies doesnt happen very often with bears.
This moma 402 lost 2 of her 3 during that summer and abandoned the 3rd last spring when another mom Holly and her cub adopted it (his name is now Lucky!!) Holly and kids have not been seen in the area yet this season.
Anyone interested, you can watch the brown bears on live cam at explore.org - there are 3 different cams along the river.

Oh my...you can relate to all bears at Katmai...WOOT! Our fave bear still has yet to show up...Otis...lol...bless his heart. We also love Backpack...or as we refer to him as BP. We just love how he positions himself on his fave rock...great for photo ops!
And then Divot...so glad the rangers saved her last year!!!
The most endearing is Holly with her adorable mini me and the adopted cub/sub cub...so sweet she let him be a part of her family!..
Someday DH and I hope to take the trek up there!

Hi Susan!
Yes I am crazy for bears of Katmai, I was so excited when I got a few minutes Sat. and saw the beloved Otis, looking fine as can be. Lurch has been there healing a missing ear and chewed off cheek. Lets see, I dont think Backpack has been seen, he should be there soon (hopefully). I am pretty sure BP is one of 402s cubs. There are so many bears there right now and many of them are not identified yet I dont think unless I missed the chatter.
Speaking of chatter, Friday I sat down with my coffee and much to my delight a live web chat was just starting with Rangers Roy and Mike, at the Lower River, that was so much fun. An unidentified mom with 3 real small cubs came thru, RR had a big round hand held amplifier he used to see if we could hear the cubs chatter. I guess he could but I couldnt pick it up, mom was nervous (and hungry) so she was here and there, finally took the babies over to the point where they waited for her to fish, awwww so adorable but you always have a ting of stress that one of the big guys will come along. Wow they live tough lives with their young dont they? R's R & M also described the makeup of the jacuzzi, how it slants down, then there is a ridge that if you go past that it drops off and the whirlpool sucks you into the falls so once you feel or the bears feel lol that tug, thats where they stop. They have both checked it out, guessing it was off season!!
I havent seen the mom with 4 cubs again, I read she has to produce 1 3/4 gallons of milk each day to feed the four, so she basically has to fish ALL day long. Can you imagine how hard it must be for those little ones to keep up, they must be exhausted at by night. I am glad I am not a bear!

Darn I was hoping to catch a nice evening at Katmai and all 3 of the cams are down. I hope it isnt anything major...
