Most think of summer color as the peak for a garden, but I love the autumn grasses and fall flowers like echinaceas (coneflowers), as they come to life among the annuals that are still going strong, particularly the roses. One of my favorite design strategies is to plant various types of coleus around ornamental grasses. It's stunning until late October when overnight frost starts to kill the coleus.

Such lovely statuary, especially coupled with the grass. So many of our plants are preparing for a winter sleep.
