I've got 3 large pots outside that I've put wave petunias in for the past few years ... but I'd like to try something different. I haven't seen anything in the local nurseries that interests me. I'm now looking at nursery websites and would like some recommendations from the gardeners here.
Here's my wish list:
- I'm in southern NM, so it will have to hold up to strong, full sun.
- They sit at a window, so I'd love something fragrant.
- I'd like something that attracts hummers or butterflies.
- Prefer perennial - evergreen, if possible.
- Nothing poisonous to dogs.
I've tried lavendar and agastache in other pots in the same area ... no luck with those.
So far, the best I've come up with are the newer petite butterfly bushes, but I just put a few of those in the ground this summer ... and they're not very fragrant.
Appreciate any recommendations you can think of ... thanks!

Don't know where you live - are those plants the end of the summer product or at their best? Can't tell from picture - IF at their best - agree you do need a change!

I'm in southern NM. The picture was taken in early Spring - before anything took off.

A hardy herb maybe? Yarrow? Just a thought.

Lantana would be nice - loves sun, attracts butterflies, and may be perennial in southern NM. It comes in many colors to suit your taste. I'm sorry but I don't know about its fragrance.

African Bush Daisy. Not fragrant but beautiful! Love the hot sun.

Portulaca or Purslane. They can both take the heat. Purslane is actually a weed. You can use it in salads. They are similar perennial succulents but not the same.
I have some of both in pots or hanging baskets.

The weedy lantana that grows along highways through the South is stinky. But I recommend the cultivars which have to my nose a ‘grapefruit’ smell.

How about a Mandavilla plant? They love the full sun and heat and bloom all of the time with no breaks...and they stay full and not leggy. They are not fragrant though, but their beauty makes up for that.
