This is what I found in our yard. I had never seen

one before-

An American Dagger moth Caterpillar.

Some people and pets can get a rash and hives from touching them. Others are never affected by them when held. They move really slowly-fascinating!

@on the bay  Isn't nature fascinating!  Did you see the orange dragonfly that visited my garden?  I never see caterpillars here, but do see moths and butterflies.

@mousiegirl-

No, I didnt see your orange moth!

you reminded me of what I now know is a luna moth that I saw last year! I'd never seen one of these before either and haven't again.

Sadly, I just read they are on the endangered listSmiley Sad

It was incredible and beautiful!

It looked like this-

Nature sure is totally amazing!

(wikipedia said a parasitic fly introduced to N.Amer. to curtail the gypsy moth has had a negative impact on these beautiful luna moths and other species of moths s wellSmiley Sad

I have seen beautiful yellow and big blue/black monarch butterflies this year!

@on the bay  I have a thread on this on the second page, "A New Visitor to My Garden.".  One day last week, all of a sudden something flew to a bamboo pole in a pot, so I looked and saw this.  I stood there staring, then realized I should get my camera, and thankfully, it was still there, and stayed for at least ten minutes.  I had never seen nor heard of this before, a Flame Skimmer dragofly.

@mousiegirl-

Oh yes! The orange dragonfly! I did see that and he/she? is so beautiful!

I thought it said orange moth! lol!

I have moths on the brain!

For some reason we have very large dragonflies flying around the yard this summer-more than I have ever seen. They are very big and fly really fast.

I have never seen that gorgeous orange one though!

We do have a resident neighborhood hawk who has come very close to me.I think he knows I won't bother him as long as he doesn't try to get the cute chipmonksSmiley Sad

I haven't seen him for a few weeks and hope he's ok. They are building a large path behind some houses and took down many trees so maybe he decided to relocate. His wing span is tremendous!

Thanks for showing that handsome orange guy again!

@on the bay  I only see the small blue cousins of dragonflies, would love to see the large again.  I watch hawks fly overhead, crows chasing them off, such cacophony, lol, and hope I never see a hawk or owl carrying something off.

Re: It's August! Post your Pics

I noticed this blonde sparrow in my yard earlier in the week and it's taken me this long to get a picture of it.  I was moving fast so it's not as clear as I would like.
