Re: Insect friend - praying mantis

The egg cases look whitish when freshly laid and they oxidize to a light tan/brownish color over time.

As one of you found out, they hatch in response to temperature! EEK!

Re: Insect friend - praying mantis

oh my GOD - you're so LUCKY!

I absolutely adore them.

A a kindergarten kid our teacher hatched a mantis egg sack and had all 20 liddle-kiddles sit out back on the grass and told us not to move - the egg sack was hatching and she wanted us to see the wonder of this WONDEFUL bug.

These lil brown critters about the size of a nickle walked all over the kids. We behaved like statues as not to harm them.

She read us several "stories" from the encyclopedia about them as we watched them.

To this day when one is in my yard (concrete yard in Philly rowhouse) I place 'im on one of my plants.

I really do love them and thank her for the experience 52 years later for allowing me to not be scared of these marvelous creatures.

Thanks for sharing Homegirl!!!!
