Hydrangea paniculata question...

My  2 vanilla strawberry hydrangeas look beautiful in my front yard this year, the problem is they are drooping! as in so big they cannot hold their own weight.

Some of the stems are standing straight up, others not so much.  I did go to the city today to ask the nursery where I bought them about staking the stems but they were closed.

Now I am wondering if the fix is to trim them late winter, so the stems are shorter during the summer, would that work?  ....any advise is appreciated, thanks!

@Mom2Dogs Mine are doing the same thing and I'm just going to cut them back for this year.

When I stake flowers or veggies, I use old pantyhose because they are soft.

@Sister Golden Hair...Thanks...I will keep that in mind. I got out the tag that came with the plants and it says to trim late winter, is that when you were planning on trimming  your plants?

@Mom2Dogs Mine are drooping so much that I'm going to cut this week.

Sounds like it might be a good idea to try to stake them since they are so pretty.

Even with watering, this terrible hot weather has been really hard on them.

I'm envious. I just wish mine would BLOOM! Lovely foliage, though.

@DukeBlueNan.....the plant in my back yard only had 3 blooms...so I trimmed it this weekend, and I am hoping for more blooms next year.

@Sister Golden Hair.....I would hate to trim my plants now....the blooms are so pretty and just getting ready to turn that beautiful strawberry color.

@Mom2Dogs@DukeBlueNan Our son bought this plant for Mother's Day many years ago and it was pink. It has now turned purple.

I make sure to feed them plant food 2 or 3 times during growing season.

@DukeBlueNan Where do you have your plants?

I found in Missouri, they do better on the north side of the house.

@Mom2Dogs

Thanks y'all. I'm certainly willing to give  your ideas a try. I so love the hydrangea . It's probably my favorite  flower. Other than tulips. And pansies. Guess I don't have a fav!

Re: Hydrangea paniculata question...

If I had flowers that beautiful I would stake them up. I would be afraid up you cut them off it will keep growing new flowers, or it might diminish the growth of you flowers next year.
