I was just outside sitting on my swing on the front porch, and saw a male hummingbird on a hibiscus bush. So I put two feeders out to start.  Central Florida.

@Dazlin    Silly question, how do you know the male from the female birds? In SoCal we leave our feeders out all year as we have an occassional hummingbird throughout the year.

Human here.....

Human here,  Ha ha I couldn't resist!

We have hummers year round here, so we keep our feeders out all year long.

I just love them so....

I don't expect to see our hummers here in W. PA until the end of April or in May. Our snow birds appear to be leaving, there are fewer here this morning.

@cjm61 it depends on what hummers you have in your area. Here we have Ruby Throated-the males have bright red throats and emerald heads, the females have white necks and throats.

Aren't they wonderful!!!  I have then all year here and put my feeder where I can keep a eye on them.  They can actually go through a lot of nectar.  Every so often there is a really thirsty one.

@cjm61 --male hummers have bright colors--red/green on their heads--that are iridescent  in the sun---female are drab brown mottled feathers.

there are hummers year round here in western WA--have 3 of them fighting over the feeder and I feed them all year. Have Annas and ruby throated.

@cjm61 , not a silly question at all.   He had a bright red throat, like others described here.

Just saw this posted on Instagram. While this is a broad estimate and isn't species specific, it could be a useful gauge for someone interested in a general / approximate arrival time for a good chunk of the Nation. Happy birding!

When I lived at the beach (SoCal) they would build a nest in a tree outside my kitchen window. I put a feeder in the tree. My cat used to sit the the window for hours watching. No worries about the birds though (two panes of glass and a screen), they were safe as my cat was a spoiled, indoor, chub.
