For the first time I ordered onion seeds. Have any of you planted onions from seeds? If so please share with me your thoughts. Please and thank you.
Growing onions from seeds (not sets) takes a while but gives you the most choice in varieties and types. Onion seeds are one of the more fragile seeds in that they only stay viable for a year or two, so buy what you need and don't plan on saving any leftovers. If you do save them you'll find the germination rate drops a lot in year two and largely stops in year three. If you can give them the light they need, and they need a lot, you should start them indoors and then move them to the garden once it warms up a bit. They can be a tick on the fragile side as seedlings, so they need careful handling, but the types, shapes, and colors of onions you can grow from seed is astounding.
