@magicmoodz, I am in the capital city of Nova Scotia, Canada.  Halifax.  Our seasons and weather are very similar to US East Coast, Maine area.  I have been in my retirement home for 10 years.  Before that, I never planted a thing in my life lol.  LM

@Lilysmom

Thank you for sharing.  I was not familiar with Halifax and did a bit of exploring online.  What a charming environment!   We have family who, while working on advanced degrees, lived in Newfoundland.  I see the similarities.

I must say, in 10 years you have become a master gardener!

@jlkz, there is not one solar light on my property.  Strange isn't it?  I take my gazing balls in for winter.  I try to limit the stuff I carry in and out.  Everything that is coming in is inside now.  Most of my statuary stays out year round.  I tried to plan the garden that way.  We have very good lighting around the house.  I have never gone down that stairway at night.  If I wanted a light there, there is an electrical outlet in the garden bed.  LM

@magicmoodz,Newfoundland is quite a bit colder than Nova Scotia.  Your family at school there are on the northeast coast of the Province which gets pretty hard winters.  The west Coast of Newfoundland is very lush, more like Nova Scotia.  It is a beautiful place to visit and a striking contrast from the hard/more barren northeast coast to the west coast.  I spent a lot of time there in my work years.  Their schools are good.  Their culture is unique.  Your family members will remember their time there for the rest of their lives.  LM

Beautiful, as always!  I like seeing the changing seasons in your gardens.  So many things to like.  To name a few - hydrangeas, Japanese forest grass, steps and stone pathways, and statuary.

@Lilysmom

 I didn't have the opportunity to visit my family while they were living in Newfoundland.  I had to giggle when you mentioned a unique culture.  When it was time for them to relocate, they were ready!  😊

@magicmoodz, there is a book by Wayne Johnston called Colony of Unrequited Dreams.  It is a fictional book that reads very close to fact about the colonization of Newfoundland and the entry of Newfoundland into Canada in 1949.  Johnston is a gifted writer and his character development is rich.

I can remember telling my boss that this book should be required reading for anyone not from Newfoundland doing business in Newfoundland.  This book delves into the psyche of Newfoundlanders in a way I have never seen before.  It is one of my favorite books.  There is a sequel to it called Custodian of Paradise.

Perhaps at some point your relative(s) who studied there will find it interesting.  LM

Thank you so much for your book recommendations.  I will most definitely pass them on to my family.  And, having a keen interest in human behavior, you have piqued my curiosity on the "psyche of Newfoundlanders".  I see a trip to the library in my future!  😊

@Lilysmom, your gardens are just beautiful, as always. You must have so much energy to maintain them so well.
