Evergreen shrubs in planters during winter

Can anyone tell me how you can leave something like a Dward Alberta Spruce or a Globe Cedar in a container/planter outside in northern locations where weather goes below freezing all winter? I would like to place two at my front door but am afraid they will die. Is there some way to insulate a planter?
