How far from the ground?

@depglass It depends where you live. If it has gone to seed and is dying back, just mow it down or cut it off right down to the ground. Let's ask @gardenman

I cut mine down to the ground when it has turned brown and was told to lay the fronds over it for protection from the cold. Kind of messy looking though. Right now it is still green. Doesn't look like we will have much winter.

Generally speaking with asparagus you cut it back after everything has turned brown. It's best to throw away the old foliage to prevent any fungal diseases persisting. A layer of mulch over the bed can be helpful also.
