🌸 DEPTFORD PINK FLOWERS 🌸

[ Edited ]

I've been really excited to show you this beauty since taking the pics a few days ago.  Named for a small community on what would now be the east end of London, the DEPTFORD PINK was once a plentiful flower native to England.  However, due to industrialization, it's sadly now on their Endangered list.

It was brought to North America for its ornamental use in gardens.  However, it now also grows as a wildflower in every state but three, Arizona, Alaska and North Dakota.

This is one of those non native species you can welcome because it sure doesn't grow in abundance.

It's vibrant pink blooms were named such, not for the reason you may think.  At the time, it was due to their serrated edges looking like pinking shears.  After that, in England every flower that was similar in color became known as Pink lol.  Before this, a name for the color pink didn't exist.

This five petal star shaped flower can grow quite tall, up to 15 inches (although I think those I found were closer to 22 inches).  If you look very closely, it's vivid petals are lightly dotted with tiny white specks as well.  Just don't try to see the flowers in the later evening hours because they close up until morning.  Its accompanying grass contributes to the visual interest of this flower, making it ideal for bouquets.

It's certainly easy to see just why this flower has been the source of many famous works of art and poetry.

So interesting @cheriere!

But I especially love the daisy in there too!

I feel the same way as you do.  I love it whenever you say that too.❤️

I never planted these of course.  I was just lucky enough to find the 3 or 4 total that were in bloom.  Unfortunately, it's not one of those wildflowers we see often enough.

That's so very kind of you to say, thank you.😊❤️

I could've written on and on I learned so much about this one, but I know people don't want a book lol.

I only wish this was a wildflower we got to see more of...at least where I live.

Please don't think we wouldn't want to read more @cheriere!  (" your book." I often say that when I write a lot) but I really love reading all about the wonderful things you discover.

Waiting for your Walking in Nature book!
