In April 2009, I inherited a Christmas cactus from my grandmother that was already at least 20 years old. At present, it has branches on it that are almost like bark, and it exceeds 4' tall/long after having been trimmed down recently.
Clippings from this old plant have spawned numerous others - some I've kept and some I've given away. Every winter over a period of 4 months they bloom TWICE with tons of pink flowers. I also have a Thanksgiving cactus that bloomed this fall and again just before the new year with many pretty white flowers.
I have never fussed over the type of soil or made sugar water or done anything else special. They get lots of indirect, west-facing sunlight and I water them a little each week (tap water). Once a long time ago I put a Jobe's plant spike in it. That's it. I don't pay any attention at all to the fancy instructions that come out every year. I have several HUGE cacti, so I know you don't need all the extra stuff.
