I've heard people say that the birds like easy access to and from a spot to feed or nest. I think they like a stable and blocked backing for their nest. I have birds that fight over the wreath basket that I have on my porch post. We like the small birds. It always amazes me how much "stuff" they find to build a nest and how tightly woven it is.
