Be Careful When Digging in Your Garden

Kelly and Shannon Thomas discovered an intact, unexploded World War I era bomb as they dug in the dirt outside their home.

The Thomas' left the bomb in place overnight and contacted authorities who sent bomb technicians from the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the ATF.

Technicians determined that the device was a 37 MKI projectile.  The weapon had not been fired, and the fusing mechanism was still intact.

Citing the best course of action, the ATF conducted an emergency disposal of the device on the scene rather than try and remove it.

The ATF says that due to a long history of military testing in Maryland, particularly around the Aberdeen Proving Ground area, unexploded military ordnance's occasionally find their way to the surface in areas around the Chesapeake Bay.

@KingstonsMom   I doubt I would know what that was if I saw it.  I might have picked it up!

I'm with @NickNack , I'd probably pick it up and throw it in the garbage can.  But really, what are the chances of finding such a thing?
