Re: An oriole is on our hummingbird feeder

Orioles are beautiful birds.  We get two kinds: Baltimore Orioles and Orchard Orioles.  We also get hummingbirds.  The orioles will get food from the hummingbird feeder.  I have a special oriole feeder, but the orioles seem to ignore it in favor of the hummingbird feeders.  I buy special packets of the oriole food; it says on there that you must use this particular food for orioles.  The ingredients look the same as hummingbird food to me.  Anyway, the orioles prefer hummingbird feeders, at least in our yard.  We do put out grape jelly and orange slices too and the orioles love to eat those foods.  A number of other birds will eat from those foods too: Gray Catbirds, American Robins, Mockingbirds, Finches...probably some I'm not listing....love to watch the birds!

We had about 6-8 here this year. They migrate through and stayed longer this year than in the past. I had an oriole feeder out with orange halves and grape jelly. Yes, they do like to drink from the hummingbird feeders. And they love suet. I got some great photos of them.

@morganjen    I live Orioles although I rarely see them. Would love to see some of your photos.

Re: An oriole is on our hummingbird feeder

Not unusual.  I've seen orioles hanging upside down trying to get sugar water out of our hummingbird feeders many times.   I also keep grape jelly in an orange oriole feeder, and they go back and forth from that to the hummer feeder.  I wonder how much sugar water they're actually able to drink out of those tiny openings?

@morganjen  I was surprised to see the Orioles on the suet feeder this spring, first time I noticed this.  Boy they sure like their grape jelly !!!!
