Re: Advice on post hurricane roses

I was at a hands on lecture two weeks ago with disease and insect specialists from Cornell Research out in the Riverhead, NY Extension area who came to us and as we walked around our community gardens (mostly vegetables) they pointed out the various problems they saw. That is where I saw ozone damage.

Blackspot is distinguishable from that other fungal disease, anthractnose by the way it looks -- blackspot is just that -- a black spot on the leaves. Anthractnose is a black edged spot with a whitish to tan center seen on the leaves.

Usually mulching below your roses helps with water splash up of spores to the leaves when there is rainfall.

It keeps raining here ☹. How on earth can these roses dry out? They are still dropping yellow, spotty leaves, but canes and what little new growth before hurricane looks good. Guess time will tell.

Oh, and more rain expected from new hurricane maria in tropics now. Looks like it should not make landfall as of now, but rain. Anyone think my roses are gone?

Can you bring the roses closer to the house? Out of the rain? I would just keep monitoring how wet the soil is after the rain. And remove wet soil and add dry soil. Remember those holes in the soil are waterlogged so your roses are reacting by dropping leaves.

Yes, I can move the large potted ones. The Lincoln, sugar moon, and Neil diamond are in beds not moveable. I guess I can buy some fresh potting soil and replace what's wet...ill wait to see about weather. Good idea!

Re: Advice on post hurricane roses

It's sad, mr.lincoln was already over 5 ft tall, and I just planted them this spring. Everyone was doing so great, and blooming, growing, and no diseases. I did, however really watch over them, and took daily care. All the others I mentioned got so tall, nice thick canes. I'm hoping they're strong enough to come back. This has been the wettest season on record, and then the hurricane. Still 90 here too😓

I would after the rains, dig up the roses, pot them up and mix the drier soil with the existing soil and then replant the roses back. I know it's a lot of work but it might save them.

You can trim them back to keep the winds from whipping around the tall canes or tie them together until the winds pass.

Re: Advice on post hurricane roses

Thanks jazzmom....ive already trimmed and tied before Irma. Also Gardenman gave a good suggestion about the trelises, which we've done as well. Everything held up, and no breakage. It was just heavy rains that did the damage to the soil. Good news for now, the other storm Maria is not expected to have any impact. I'm hoping for drier weather. We lost a couple of beautiful weeping willow trees, and a section of fencing. Waiting to dry out a bit until we can repair. I have horses, so a temporary fence is up. Thank God, all structures did great, and the barn and horses are great too. Another thing I'm doing is airating the soil, by poking deep holes around, and keeping it loose. As you mentioned, it's a bit of work, but I certainly don't mind if I can save them...i enjoy the roses very much...its my hobby☺

@Nonametoday

CORNMEAL  and TEA  for Roses!  ??  Thank you for this suggestion.

I already use ground up egg shells and coffee grounds with very good results.

I just made a pitcher of TEA and will use the tea bag grounds

Many years ago I used watered down tea to water my African Violets in my office! <G>

GRITS:  Girl Raised In The South  <G>

I am in the SW GA area, we had high winds and rain when IRMA paid a visit.

My Roses are out my Kitchen window in a corner a little protected from the winds.

I just pruned/deadheaded older roses and see some new growth.

Keep Calm and Rose On,
