A question about orchids

I am not a gardener and don't post here but a friend bought me an Orchid as a gift and now I need help because I don't want to hurt it. She told me to water it with ice once a week and that it will thrive on being ignored because our climazte is perfect for it. (i live in florida)It is very pretty - purple flowers about 3 " across - but the pot is very tall & thin so I would like to transplant it into a more stable pot so it doesn't get blown over in the wind.
