I like Dr. Scholl's socks for diabetics for myself and DH . My calves are not wide and DH's border on skinny. It seems that a lot of sock manufacturers feel that the top part of a sock should be about 2 inches after stretching ! Not good for anyone's leg and foot health.

The one's I mentioned come in knee high  and lately I have seen them in many colors. I love them for the winter.  I buy them at Walmart and most box stores carry them. They are very stretchy and wear well.
