I often see posts where ladies talk about buying multiple articles of clothing every season. For those of you who are buying clothes on a constant basis, do you keep discarding as many items as you bring home or do you just keep accumulating and just try to find more room to accommodate the new additions?

it takes years for me to "replenish" basics since I take good care of them. Yearly like some say about whites, etc. never. It just makes me think they must wear them every day or they aren't washing them correctly. My whites never get grey. Same for black clothes.

LOL good question. I cannot obviously speak for others but I grew up very poor and was sometimes homeless as an orphan so I tend to go by the saying "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without" Even if I did have the money today I would not buy things to just "refresh" my wardrobe. I view that saying "refreshing the wardrobe" as a sales pitch to justify overly spending. Personally I call that wasteful but to those who have not been as poor I am certain they would disagree with me and that is ok, I also traveled to third world countries and opened my eyes to the real meaning of poor and how grateful those people are even though they have very little. But on the other hand if one has expendable cash and they want to replace items seasonally I say go for it. I have a good friend who was rich and shopped her way by TV into the poor farm "refreshing" her wardrobe to the point of filling 4 closets. (yet she doesnt go anywhere" Is that hoarding? LOL If I do buy a few pieces I pay them off immediately and do not believe in cfredit card debt for anything.

I shop a lot, it's sort of my hobby. I'm at the point in my life at which I have a lot, so I call it "filling in" my wardrobe for the season. Also, my weight has been stable so I'm wearing things from year to year now. Yes, every season, I throw some things out and donate some things. To make room for the new but mostly because I don't hang on to clothing that I haven't worn or just don't like. For example, I've given up on the skinny jean/slim leg jeans look. Been there, done that. It's not my best look anyway. I'm back to my modern bootcuts which are back in big way. I gave many, many pairs of those skinny jeans to a women's cbarity. I also gave 3 moto jackets away. I hardly wore them because I didn't really like that style but "everyone" was wearing them. I love white tees, I buy them cheap from Old Navy when they have them on sale. I through out the ones that were stained or stretched out. I do that sort of thing every season. So,yes. Things come into my closet, things go out. I've never been one of those women who has clothes that are 20 years old in the closet.

There's no rght or wrong method for keeping old clothes, shoes, and handbags while adding new ones. There can be extremes. For example: there are those who keep expanding their closets and hoarding; and those discard something every time a new piece is purchased.
Because I live in an area which has four distinct seasons, the change of seasons is a good time to review what's in my closet. My system is if I haven't worn it yet, I probably won't, and it goes in the donation box. The donation box also gets things which I've just become bored with, but are still in excellent condition for wearing. Anything which is in a condition I would not wear is not donated... it goes in a garbage bag. I don't buy things which are super trendy, so no charity is in danger of getting gauchos from me next year. I am simply too ******-retentive about neatness to hoard multiple closets full of clothes. I have one walk in closet for clothes, shoes, accessories, etc., and all of my outerwear is in the hall closet.

I'd imagine everyone has to refresh her wardrobe at least once or twice a year even if it's just by shopping at Walmart, which I used to do for T-shirts and stuff like that. I found the Walmart items did not fit well AT ALL and did not wash well or last, so I gave that up.
In the past couple of years, I've picked up quite a few decent quality, classic items from HSN at fire-sale prices to the point that I no longer shop for much of anything. I got Marla Wynne shirts that had been selling for $70 months earlier for $11 each and quite a few other things for business and casual wear that will last me for many years. Three weeks ago, I went out for lunch in a fabulous dark-green George Simonton jacket that I bought on sale a couple of years ago but hadn't worn for some reason. I just love it, and the Q is INSANE to have let him go. I highly recommend starting a favorites file at HSN and tracking them daily because they discount heavily and you can get some nice things for sub-Walmart prices.
Even so, I still have to replace the everyday items that I wash and wear over and over. I got three Cuddleduds tunics from QVC this year and am wearing them out. We still have cool weather, so I'm still wearing them. I just love them, but they'll be worn out by the end of next winter if not before.

Me too! My clothes are in the huge walk in closet in the master bedroom, there is no "over flow" into other closets. Hubby's clothes are in the closet in the 2nd bedroom that we now use as a family room. The hall closet is for outerwear and I store my shoes and handbags (yeah, I have a lot) on the shelved storage area off the living area. I love that! Now I have my "in season" handbags and shoes on display and since I see them, I wear them. The other handbags are in their dust covers and the shoes are in boxes but everything is clearly labelled to make it easier when I make the seasonal "switch". My boots are lined up there too. Life is sooooo much nicer now that I'm organized.

For me, a lot of it depends on climate. I have four seasons also, and some things, like tank tops, I wear year round. It is supposedly spring, but with the rain and cold temps I have yet to wear a skirt or dress without tights. We are in "testing mode", so I am on call during my planning periods. Lately I've been wearing pants every day, with comfort shoes, since most of my time is spent walking around the school and relieving those who need a testing break. We have also been doing "Black Fridays", where we dress head to toe in black for the union. I have been scurrying to find enough black to wear on these days, because I am not a "black" person. The black items I did have I have worn and washed a bunch since October, so probably by next year's time I will need to replace those due to fading. A big part of how I dress is related to the climate control at school. I have moved 7 times in 7 years, and each classroom is different. In my previous room, I could wear a blazer or cardigan each day through June, due to the level of AC. Now, my room is more "seasonal", while my neighbor's room feels as if the heat is on. I used to wear more skirts, when Coldwater Creek had tons of pretty ones to choose from, but I have donated most of those below the knee length with polyester and have gone to more of a pencil silhouette.
