When my dad took on a second job, weekends, in the early 60s, managing a drive-in theater concession stand, we'd wear our pj's to the show and fall asleep in the car. Best parents' second job ever! Does that count?

now that you mention it, we wore our PJs to the drive-in too!

This weekend I saw a woman going into a 7-Eleven in her fleece bathrobe. She was probably in her 30s or 40s.

Nope, and wouldn't let my children either. Luckily they have never tried. My little girl loves to dress up so I don't think she would like the idea.

Well, I might - if the house caught on fire while I was sleeping and I didn't have time to change.

And Colliegirls, I am 80. I never went out in curlers. Neither did my Mother. Neither did my Grandmother. They all went to the beauty parlor every week. No curlers in our family ever. If anything, they always went out well dressed - sometimes overdressed for their planned activity. That's how it was in MY South. Where did you grow up????

That's how it was in the northeast too. At least that was my experience. My friends & I all used curlers, but only at home. Neither of my grandmothers would ever have even thought about going outside in curlers. My mother wouldn't have either. She had a standing beauty parlor appointment every Saturday, and always looked well-put-together whenever she went anywhere.

My friends & I were pretty casual, but we never wore pajamas or curlers or anything like that in public. We always wanted to look as good as possible because you never knew when you might run into the boy you had a crush on!

College students seem to do this on campus. I haven't seen it anywhere else (thankfully).

The HS kids here do, as well. I teach in a JHS. We have a strict dress code, so this doesn't happen.

Last year, my dad asked me to stop at a FF restaurant for him. It was right off the I-5 freeway near my house. There were two couples, sitting at two separate tables and all of them were wearing pajamas. Not one couple, but TWO. I was dumbfounded. I told DH when I got home and he said, "Maybe it's because it's off the freeway, people are traveling and want to be comfortable." Whaaaaa? It was 3 o'clock in the afternoon! I think it's a symptom of how careless our society has become about too many things.

I don't think it has anything to do with a "careless society". It's simply a current trend. No different than ladies wearing curlers, shapeless housedresses or muu muus in days gone by. Sometimes we tend to think every silly fad these days is the epitome of a failing society. We need to remember there were some pretty awful fashion fads years ago too.

I don't agree. Leaving the house in the clothes you slept in is a sloppy habit. Are they brushing their teeth and washing their faces? You would think if you have the sense to brush your teeth and wash up, you would have the sense to change into fresh clothing.

I think that pj's that were slept in are different than pj pants (or pj-looking pants) that some young girls wear (with regular tops), just as a cute kind of style. But yes, I agree with what you're saying because I do realize that there probably are people who simply roll out of bed, discover they have no milk for their cereal, and can't be bothered to change out of their pj's before going to the store. And I agree - That's lazy & sloppy. Clearly no shower or washing up was involved.

I really don't think that is a fashion fad. And I don't think wearing curlers in public was ever a fashion fad either. No one did it because it was considered trendy. They did it because they didn't feel like taking the curlers out or because their hair hadn't totally set yet. I really don't think it was ever any kind of fashion statement or considered to be "in". Neither were "shapeless housedresses". Women wore them because they were easy to throw on and they were comfortable, especially in hot weather or when doing housework.

People wearing things out of habit (or laziness or a casual lifestyle or whatever) doesn't make them "fads" or trendy or in style. It's simply what some people do.

RE: Walmart Betty Boop

Or she could be a teacher who is required to dress up on ""pajama day"" and had to make a pit stop on the way home from work. This is a new trend to promote school spirit...

Am I the only one who thought Walmart Betty Boop was a man?

I don't ever wear pj's. I wear comfy shorts in summer and like stretch (not tight ones) pants in winter. i would not wear those pj's out in public. I don't care what other people wear.

I don't even own flannel PJs.

I once saw someone wearing a pair of shorty PJs in public. I owned the sme PJs. What a horrible look.

But, admittedly, some PJs look as good or better than regular clothes. But not most.

I hate to admit this but a certain family member of mine, who shall remain nameless is 62 years old and wears these all the time. I have seen him in our grocery store in his pajama pants and a shirt with the name of the H.S. football team.

This is an educated person with a very high profile job. Too each his own!

I thought only Honey Boo Boo set did stuff like that. People who are not educated and were raised by illiterate and lazy family. Like that movie Tobacco Road.
