Re: Zippers on coats

[ Edited ]

I love zippers and seek out coats that have them. I think they're cute, and they make a garment look streamlined.

It's true that zippers can stick if you get a bad one; on the other hand, buttons can pop off and get lost or at least need to be sewn back on.

I've never been a fan of buttons. They seem to pull at the wrong place (I have a full chest) and they look busy to me.

I guess that's why there are choices in the marketplace. People are looking for different things!

I bought a cute new hip length olive colored jacket. It does zip but that's not was bothers me. It's the zippers on each pocket. Large pockets but the zipper digs into the upper part of my hand and wrist. Almost returned it but I like it too much. It will probably ruin my leather gloves too, have to remember that.

I like buttons on a wool long dress coat and zippers for casual coats.

I recently purchased a Land’s End coat that has a zipper and buttons.  I can close one or the other or both.

@Patriot3

I totally agree with you ;my worst nightmare is when said zipper gets stuck with some fabric and you have to be really careful disentangling the imbroglio or just jump out of your coat🌻

I am really great at getting coat zippers unstuck.  I do it several times almost every day in colder months. Kids and zippers are an accident waiting to happen.

This is an interesting distinction - and one I agree with. A long dress coat seems to call for buttons.

Although, I've also seen dressy coats that have neither buttons or zippers!

I agree that buttons look much better on a dressy coat. You don't see zippers on a long wool coat. Lots of wrap coats out now. I think they look great but I live in a very cold winter climate.

I just ordered a long wool Jones New York coat to replace my old one. From Burlington Coat Factory. $99.00. I'm just hoping it fits. It's a blend but it's over 60% wool.

The majority of my coats have buttons and I prefer them. When zippers go up, that's it unless you pay for it to be fixed or have the luck of being able to do it yourself or know someone that will fix it for free. Coats with buttons can keep you warm, especially if they're made of fleece or Berber. I have a long Berber coat I only use when it's 20 degrees and below. I don't feel anything in that while waiting in the deep freeze for the bus early in the morning! Woman Very Happy

I have to be sure to have my glasses on when zipping and not have gloves on when buttoning. I do think zipped is warmer when that is an issue. I have had a 'favorite' coat with zipper that broke and having it replaced prohibitive for my purposes Smiley Sad

I have a favorite from SG's line -- a reversible fleece jacket that I always receive compliments on when I wear it , but no matter how I try to tighten the buttonholes  they come open so only wear when chilly not really cold.

I found a hint to rub a leaded pencil on a zipper (carefully check whether it gets on fabric) can help a sluggish zipper to operate better.

I will never purchase another coat with toggles again. For some reason I have the most difficulty those ! They twist and turn.

My favorite (very warm) parks has a zipper and Velcro tabs.  It is also washable: the perfect parka!
