I always had a criteria for a winter parka - zipper & the velcro tabs - pockets and hood lined with polar fleece, coat body lined with fleece was also extra good, though difficult to find that. Also made of a water resistant fabric so if your caught out in the snow the wetness doesn't come thru.

I bought a cute new hip length olive colored jacket. It does zip but that's not was bothers me. It's the zippers on each pocket. Large pockets but the zipper digs into the upper part of my hand and wrist. Almost returned it but I like it too much. It will probably ruin my leather gloves too, have to remember that.

GMTA! I was going to contribute to the thread for that very same point! Zippers on pockets are awful! They're cold AND scrape your skin!

I do prefer the look of zippers to buttons though and they're inherently better for a tighter 'seal' so to speak...

I have both and notice a problem with the zipper when it get stuck in that seam. And the problem I have with buttons is that if they are cheaply made they will fall off very easily both can be annoying at times.Woman Frustrated

It's awkward to have to lean over and thread up a zipper on a coat.  I'll hold the coat closed, I won't do that!Smiley Happy
