No idea what qualifies as "old school," but I'm old enough to remember the days when women pretty much owned one pair of dress shoes - they went with absolutely everything she wore and they were black!
One of my favorite dresses when I was in college over 50 years ago was a navy blue sheath which I wore with my best black pumps.

Definitely -black and navy together has always been in style, it is just a matter of preference. I have a navy cocktail dress and I would wear sheer black hose with a black patent pump, very dressy look. I have never owned a pair of navy shoes. For me they are not as versatile as black, metallic or nude.

I was always taught that you could wear black with navy but you can't wear navy with black!!

Anything goes today! There are no more ""fashion rules."" We are free to be you and me - and that is one of the things I really like about the world today.
