I don't think frumpy, dumpy and matronly have anything to do with age.

I am "experienced, worldly, and smart", although somewhat worn, wrinkled and grey - but - I paid for every one of those wrinkles and grey hairs and I am proud of them!!! And a word to those who may describe me as an old lady - with the help of God, you too will someday be an old lady. It would be a good thing to keep that in mind.
gonnab, I agree with pretty much everything you've said, and you expressed it very well. I get really tired of hearing "only old ladies would wear that", etc. etc. etc. Well, I guess you could consider me an "old lady" ( I hope I make it to 78), and I don't think, feel, dress or look "old", as in frumpy, dumpy, and matronly! (Sounds like three of the seven dwarves!
) Thanks to my mom's God-given genetics, I don't have that many wrinkles, I wouldn't be seen in anything even close to frumpy, and most people think I'm way younger than I am. My nieces and nephews, who now have grown children of their own, refer to me as the "cool aunt"! And I drive a red sports car. According to my son, his friends also think I'm cool, and one referred to me as "beautiful" (he needs his head examined)... but it sure put a smile on my face.
So yes, there are some older women who apparently have lost their interest in looking good, fashionable, etc., but please stop lumping us all together! We have just as many differences with each other in our age group as twenty-somethings, thirty-somethings, etc. do in theirs.
I did think the host in question was slightly "underdressed" yesterday, but would not put it in the terms some people used.
(And the young boys who wear their pants around the bottom of their bu^tts should be turned over someone's knee and spanked on those bu^tts - and their parents should be given a parenting refresher course!)

ITA with above statement. A sense of style and pride in your appearance has nothing to do with age.

People who put no effort into their appearance are not always old! The point is that there are just as many young sloppy looking people as old - always has been and always will be.

Totally agree, thus the frumpy and dumpy adjectives!!

When I see the precious older ladies who "own" some of these labels, I wish I could talk to them about all of their life experiences. They are/were someone's daughter, sister, wife, mother, best friend. They are former teachers, active church ladies, community people. They have the wisdom of more years than we may ever have. Their hands are often so garnled that there is no way they can handle buttons.
Many times their life circumstances have brought them to make choices they have to have.
Bless their hearts. It's about living, not fashion.

You have totally missed the point.

Absolutely. The words/terms are always used with intent to insult, and usually to get a rise out of someone. Those who routinely post to insult do so because they enjoy it and can get away with it most of the time. It says much about their emotional age.
