I've thrown an item or two out in my lifetime, too, but usually I make rags, and Handsome likes rags for the garage. About a week ago, I pulled out a rag to dust and it was the bottom of an old JJill pima cotton tee...I laughed and laughed!

No one can beat me on the tends-to-overkeep meter! I've been de-cluttering, too. I think, other than vintage pieces, my oldest garment was around 16 years old, I kid you not! So, I would add: Even if I still wear it and it's in pretty good shape, get rid of it for pete's sake after a few years. One thing I noticed (YMMV) is that I tend to feel, wrongly, that I'll never find another piece exactly like it, so I better keep it just in case. SMH
I laugh HA HA at your 16 year old garment! Try 30! But I am borrowing the vintage designation (cuz hoarder hurts)
But on the possibly helpful side: The most important question is 'Why haven't you worn it?' I actually culled a couple of pieces last night (I'm running out of hangers) for 2 different reasons; one for being too occasional even though it's adorable I never EVER have the right 'event'. Let's call it gothic little house on the prairie. The window of opportunity is a mere peephole!
The second garment was a wide leg pant with a shirred waistband. I looked in the mirror above the sink and thought 'oh that's cool' and then looked in the full length mirror and a certain water retaining mammal's foot came to mind...It's out of here!
My sad saga will continue over the weekend...

Wow! Were/are you still wearing the 30 yr old vintage?? I wore the 16 yr old thang maybe once a year...it finally went out the door. (I hear ya about the "h" word...I had so many donations I was starting to worry, so I asked Handsome if he thought I had a "problem." He said no...phew!)
I'm having trouble wrapping my head around "gothic" in the same sentence with "little house on the prairie!" Who wants to see Andrea post a pic of that one on her OOTD thread!?? Hey, it would be the peephole of opportunity LOL. (No, we do not want to see the shirred waistband wide leg! )

If I put something on and want to take it off, it goes.

I am a serious declutterer. I don't keep anything in my life that I don't want. Period. I keep a bag under my bed in case I wear something that is not comfortable and does not fit right.
Today I am donating 7 tee shirts from talbots and chicos that are in excellent condition, but they are too short for me now. They are 24 inches long. I need more coverage for my perimenipausal belly so off they go. I hope someone will enjoy them. I don't have a thing in my closet that I don't love and I can't tel you how freeing it is. I still have a lot of clothes mind you, but they fit and I wear them when needed.
I also have twice as many spring/summer clothes than fall/winter. I sweat alot and need to wash them everyday.
PS--If you want to learn to live more simply with your wardrobe go to the website "be more with less." Great tips also "into mind" another great wardrobe site.

Thanks for the be more with less website recommendation! Less clutter, more space...seems simple doesn't it

Perfectly good silk dresses that I COULD still wear! LOL A bunch of concert tees...well those are dwindling thanks to a certain someone I gave birth to who shall remain nameless! Suffice to say she's running around in a Jimmy Buffet tee older than she is! (31)
There are also jeans that I've had for at least 2 decades..a tee shirt from a job I enjoyed..
Gothic meets little house is a full length black satin-y skirt with a corsetted-lace up waist and a frou frou underskirt of black mesh that makes the skirt poof out and extends past the hemline..... It's kind of dramatic! lol
I closed on my condo when my daughter was 8; she's 31 now. Some of the things hanging in my closet, and in the dresser, made the move with us....

I look at the fabric. If the piece just doesn't look "fresh" anymore, then I get rid of it. I'm not talking about the obvious issues like stains or rips, but more about how things can sometimes look after lots and lots of wearings.
For example, I like new white tees every year. What I have may fit great, look good on me and be in style. But if it's starting to look dingey from the wash, it's time for it to go.
Pilling is another example of something I look at to help me decide.

I ask many of the questions others do:
Do I still like the item?
Does it fit and flatter?
Does it fit my needs now?
Is it comfortable? (No constant adjusting, tugging, or pulling allowed)
Can I wear it with other things in my closet?
The question that helps the me the most when I am undecided is "Would I buy this today?"
I also keep a bag in my basement for donations since I purge regularly.

I really, really need to do this! I just do not have the time or energy right now.
I am finding that I am disliking 3/4ths of my clothing! Given the time, I would purge so much it wouldn't even be funny,
I cannot stand tops which dip low at all in the front or which keep slipping off my shoulders. This makes me so self-conscious and uncomfortable. Also, tops which are in any way "grabby". On the other hand, tops which are too baggy are just as bad.
I want clothing items which are more tailored but not tight. I like material that is soft, does not cling and moves with you.
I am also discovering that there is not much point in my buying any more short sleeved tops. The season for wearing them is so short. Plus, I am not outside that much and being inside, the air conditioning necessitates my wearing a sweater of some type because my arms get cold. I do the best in 3/4 length sleeves.
Anything too fussy, frou-frou, or which has to be ironed --- needs to go!
