Re: What makes you refer to a top as a blouse?

[ Edited ]

I've always thought that all blouses are tops, but all tops aren't blouses.   A blouse is usually a woven fabric and structured.

In between buttons that gap open at your breasts  No matter how over size you get it.  I hate it.  It looks horrible.  I don't wear blouses very much or at all for that reason.  And I'm not very big to begin with.

Anything else is a top to me. And I always refer to it as a top.

@songbird

so...you can't actually shop for a blouse because it's not a blouse until you put it on and doesn't fit??

' that shirt was cute on the hanger! Too bad it turned out to be a blouse!'

The "peasant blouse" has no buttons.

Here's what Wikipedia authors have gathered as their definition:

"A blouse (/blzblsblz/)[1] is a loose-fitting upper garment that was formerly worn by workmen, peasants, artists, women, and children.[2] It is typically gathered at the waist or hips (by tight hem, pleats, parter, or belt) so that it hangs loosely ("blouses"[3]) over the wearer's body.[2] Today, the word most commonly refers to a girl's or woman's dress shirt[4] It can also refer to a man's shirt if it is a loose-fitting style (e.g. poet shirts and Cossack shirts),[5] though it rarely is. Traditionally, the term has been used to refer to a shirt which blouses out or has an unmistakably feminine appearance.

The term is also used for some men's military uniform jackets.[6]"

@GingerPeach

Funny! nothing about it being woven but that seems to be the one characteristic most of us agree on!

I think of a blouse as having buttons all the way down
