To me they are the same thing.

The word loungewear was invented so they could charge a lot more money and it worked!

I have no trouble "lounging" in the jeans and tees I put on in the morning to wear for the day.  If its winter and drafty in the house, I might put on my velour robe.

[ Edited ]

I don’t own what I consider “loungewear.”  I put PJ’s on right before bed, and jump in the shower first thing in the morning. During the day I’m in jeans and a tee or sweater. I never dress with the thought that I won’t be leaving the house, because you never know what can come up.

I guess when I think of “loungewear,” I think of someone sitting around at night just “lounging,” mostly in front of the tv, but I do that in my regular clothes. So it’s just old-fashioned pajamas for me!

INHO pajamas are for bedtime.  Loungewear is for lounging at home - after  work, weekends.  Sometimes (and not always) for casual entertaining at home with family or very close friends, but definitely with under garments. Otherwise, ladies, put on your

clothes and look like you have some pride.

I recall once a lady answered her door in a nightshirt and a pair of socks. Hair a huge mess etc. Well, she had won the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. Her picture looking like that was on National television that night on every channel. Can you imagine?

I can imagine not giving a hoot because I just won a boatload of cash. :-)

@151949 I love Stan Hermans robes, I have owned one that has to be at least 7 years old. He has quality bathrobes. I would not consider his bathrobes loungewear.

Re: What is the difference between pajamas and "loungewear"?

I just had to answer his one!  I have no "at home" clothes.  When I come home from work, after dinner the first thing I do is take off my work clothes and put on my Robe (Ino they are not hard to find - I have about twenty of them, some for winter and some for summer.  Don't like wrap robes, must be zip or button as there is nothing underneath.  Let's my skin breathe and no tight underwear - pure comfort.  Of course it is just DH and I.  If I am expecting guests I am dressed appropriately.  If someone comes over unexpectedly, my robes are all quite pretty and probably alot nicer than at home clothes would be and I would excuse myself and dress if they were staying.   I can sit on my porch, go to my mailbox, etc. in my robe - no close neighbors.  As far as PJ's, they would  not be something I consider comfortable, don't want anything around my waist, when I am at home relaxing.  As far as sleeping, wearing Pj's would be the same as going to bed or taking a shower dressed.  I choose to wear only my coverlet.  And yes, as someone mentioned, my sheets stay clean as I shower before bed.

When I think of loungewear, I think of clothes that are suitable for at home entertaining - something glamerous - not the pajama type clothes now considered loungewear.
