What is the difference between pajamas and "loungewear"?

[ Edited ]

I needed a new robe and was looking in some catalogs. They have little in the way of robes these days but a lot of what is labeled "loungewear".When I get undressed in the evening I put on a nightshirt and a robe over it.Is this loungewear to be worn over your nightshirt or PJs like a robe.

I ordered 2 of what I thought were long nightshirts, but , in fact were called loungewear and when they arrived, heck, you could wear them anywhere you would wear a maxi length t shirt dress.Finished as well as a dress, maxi length, pockets, v neckline, and a heavier weight fabric than my  Denim & Co t shirt dresses.

So, any opinions on what is loungewear?

I sometimes think "loungewear" was invented in order to sell the same pajamas in a different color/fabric.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck. . . it probably IS a duck.

I think those Walmart shoppers that went outside  wearing PJs started something

I can absolutely state I'd never go out in public without a bra & underwear under my clothes, short of an extreme emergency like the house is on fire, so I can't possibly imagine going out in my PJs or loungewear, since I don't sleep in a bra & underwear.

Hi @151949. The definition of loungewear keeps changing. To me, it’s what I wear around the house, during the day, when not going out. I have a stack of metal, basket pull out drawers with these clothes in my closet...one drawer devoted to my studio clothes that already have paint or holes. My usual day outfits are loose boyfriend jeans, black knit pants (not leggings) and a variety of long or short sleeve tees, “nice” sweat shirts, waffle tees or sweaters (that aren’t nice enough to wear out anymore).

The days that I’m dressed and out, I like to change into a “house outfit” before cooking dinner. At night, to relax & watch tv, I wear a long, pullover, long sleeve “robe”.... actually nightgowns thick enough to not see through from LL Bean or LandsEnd....cotton for warm months and flannel in winter. I started sleeping “au naturel” recently.

No clothes vs clothes

No bra vs bra

@Shanus You sound like my DH. He hangs around the house wearing old frayed t shirts and old gym shorts most of the time. Almost all his at home clothes are mended and patched - he likes that they are soft and comfy, and he hates when something is just no longer wearable & has to go into the trash.

I usually hang out in capris and t shirts. Some are also old, but all presentable if I need to run to the bank or grocery store.

I change out of my work clothes into loungewear when I get home. I change out of the loungewear into pajamas at bedtime.
