This thread prompted me to take a quick look in my closet today to see what I might be able to part with.
I found several pair of jeans that I used to love, including one pair of Levi's from at least 25 years ago. Oh, how I loved that perfect pair of Levi's. Great faded blue, slim leg, perfect length. Of course, I would not even be able to pull them up now. The other jeans were just OK. I really could have gotten rid of them all since I know I'll never wear them. I have too many pairs of newer ones that actually (usually) fit.
But what did I do? Told them all not to worry, that they would be staying with me. We had some good times together! I put them back in the closet and walked out of the room;

Tons of clothes that I’ll never wear and that are too small ( think 3 sizes back).
But my favorite pieces of clothes I longingly look at (and refuse to ‘give up’) are mostly clothes that have the Louis Dell’Olio name on the label.

I can purge and organize my whole entire house but I can not seem to part with clothes. I have tons of clothes in several sizes and ages.Go through them every spring and fall and maybe take out 5 tops. I just cant do it.

I still have a few things that I am unsure of--will try them on soon. they are more for wearing in the warmer weather and here in WA state, warm weather is several months away. and then my DD will give me the thumbs up or down----most my stuff is too big anyway but can be used as layering pieces----not much in my close now. Did a couple major extractions last year----

Travelling back and forth from north to south, I pretty much have my closets simplified to what I need and use.
I find whatever works for someone is all in the way people look at things. To some, older articles of clothing provoke sweet memories. The thought of not having them isn't an option. To others, having items hanging in their closet they no longer use or want becomes almost claustrophobic, a cluttered, hard to breathe experience.
I am in the second category. Everyone is different. That is what keeps this forum interesting.

A couple of pairs of shoes and a cold shoulder blouse, tags still on, that I just never got around to wearing the last two summers. Now, I think cold shoulder is done. I did a major closet clean out last year so I'm in good shape. Not that I ever held onto anything for 30, 40, 50 years.

As far as not donating to Goodwill, but rather to a homeless shelter, is again, a personal choice. While homeless need clothing, Goodwill offers low cost clothing to those who can't afford new, but don't want a hand out of free clothing. Besides, if they did away with Goodwill and other thrift stores, that wouldn't be fair to those of us that like to go "picking".

I hired a girl several years ago to help me get rid of clothes. I had a ton and I gave her about 6 huge boxes of clothes and the rest donated. I still have a ton and no energy so its hard to do myself. My clothes are cute too and I could still wear them but I don't go out much and I can't afford to hire someone again.
I kept a black/white jumpsuit I wore to my 25th high school reunion that I love.
Someone is going to get some cute clothes at my estate sale when the time comes.

A couple of beautlful wool pencil skirts that my mom made for me when I was working. She was an extraordinarily gifted seamstress. They were cut from a plus sized pattern though, and I now wear much smaller clothing. There's really no way to alter them so there they hang in my closet.

A swimsuit that I wore on a trip to Italy with my husband. Memories!
