I can't be picky because of my size anymore, but when I could wear nice clothes I looked for the best fabric quality and hardware quality.  I like real wool, silk, great buttons (not plastic). I like (in the past) clothes that are fitted to the body and enhance one's figure. I hate rayon.

I look for:

classic, simple lines

fit

fabric content

construction

country of origin

washing instructions

 

 

I will not buy:

Ruffles

acrylic, 100% polyester, rayon

cold shoulder sleeves, sharkbite hems, & other trendy designs

pleated trousers

Loud, busy prints (most of my clothes are solid color)

babydoll anything

Fur

 

The list for both is longer, but these are things that immediately come to mind
