Yes, there are real chaps made from suede.  And it's pronounced "shaps" not "chaps" -- as in guys.

They're a Ralph Lauren fashion item, not workwear. Are they really so different from, say, all of the British equestrian-style looks that are frequently shown (or safari-style clothing, etc.)? Some people like something new and different in a denim style -- I really don't think they're that "far out."
