Waterproofing boots?

I just purchased a pair of leather riding boots (on sale, of course) and would like to protect the leather by waterproofing. Should I attempt DIY or go to a shoe repair shop and have it done profesionally? They are a chocolate brown and I am afraid I might darken the leather if I do it myself. {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

Anyone with any advice, please let me know!
