It's how to add knit or crochet to distressed or other tattered garments.  What's particularly interesting - the article is written by a guy!

 

There are step-by-step instructions (with pictures).   If you want to try it, you can buy mini skeins of yarn in assorted colors from Amazon.

 

Looks like a fun way to customize your distressed jeans!
