I dress for myself. Sometimes I look like a slob, and I don't care, as long as I'm comfortable. Other times I like to fix myself up, but never in my life have I asked a single person if I look nice. My mom tried to tell me what to wear at one point, but she lost that battle. She was kind of ugly about it, come to think of it. Still, I'm never getting rid of my olive colors, and my hideous ponchos, and my penguin prints.

@Sooner wrote:I firmly believe that we all dress to send others whatever message we want to send about how we are. Animals do it, people do it. The lion has a mane that sends a message, as does a peacock, etc. The President wears a suit and rock and roll hair bands have hair and lycra. From Sunday school teachers to drug dealers and gang bangers, most of us have a "look" to identify us.
If you dress to please yourself, that's probably what others see in your appearance--that you don't dress to please most people. How we adorn ourselves is how we see ourselves, and how we are comfortable appearing to others.
So I don't think we dress to "please." We dress to announce to the world and to ourselves who we are, and what we want them to think we are.
Well said Sooner - my shoes give this statement - mess with me and I will plant my foot so far up your.......

Nothing wrong with self-expression, @Bird mama. ;-)

Aww girl, you know me. I'm not one of those posters who fights. Life's too short.
I went to a birthday party at a metro park last week. My one niece looked at my outfit and said I looked like I stepped off the runway, he he. I was wearing skinny jeans, a sleeveless longer tunic, a shrug and 4 inch heels.
Now, these 4 inch heels are so comfy (I know, never would think it) that I've worn 'em grocery shopping. I was up and down hills and played with the wee ones at the swingsets. My sisters kept saying, don't twist your ankle. I just laughed. I've always been a high heel freak.
Well, I'm reassurred. I was picturing you with those trained falcons that will rip your face off! Ha ha!!!! Just kidding!
I am the opposite. I never did like heels even if comfortable. I am "skeered" of heights of all kinds! Your outfit sounds great! I am impressed with the shoes for sure.
I was a "birdmama" once--had a parakeet that lived 9 years.

I dress for moi.
The only time I have not truly dressed for me is on the few occasions in my life when I've been on a job interview. Having only four jobs over more than 40 years this was not often. I wore the simple dark clothing for the interview, but you can bet there was a buckle, or some embellishment, on the bag and shoes to set them apart from being dull old black.

I dress to suit ME and the occassion, if there is one. I am not one for going whole hog but do want to look appropiate for wherever I go. Always have been that way. I try to keep up with fashion and colors but am not a slave to that. I'm 62 so not a spring chicken, but not ready for anything dowdy or plain. I hate having to work at fashion--want fashion to work for me.
