I bought last winter a coat by Calvin Klein from Macy's . It is a wool/blend coat with a great warm hood......I live in Wisconsin, so not too far from you so I know how cold the winters can get........Macy's has a lot of nice coats, I wanted to purchase another one this winter, but I thought nah-but I still might! lol!!!!

I too am short & live in central west Michigan (close to Lk MI). I have a variety of outerwear & what I put on obviously goes with what's happening outside. We've been very spoiled so far, but I hear that some ca-ca is on the way late next week. So, I have everything from light/medium weight fleece jackets (Land's End), a wool pea coat, and for full-out blizzards, I have an older Columbia down parka with hood. I don't go for beauty when it's really nasty outside. Good luck in your search. Lots of good deals in outerwear right now (Land's End has petite sizes, if that's an issue for you).

Hey Girlfriend. I'm in neiboring Glen Ellyn.
Ah, for us..... I have several depending on the nastiness of the day. Most of the time if it's windy, I'm wearing an ankle length Pam McCoy, any other cloth coats don't do anything for us.
when the weather isn't so bad, I wear shorter faux fur.

Same here! When it is nasty outside, I don't go for beauty, either. The puffy puffer down coat do add pounds, but they are warm for the midwest weathers.

South Central AZ: Right now it's been in the low 40's at night..........and a leather or faux fur jacket will do the trick......so long as you don't STAY outside for very long. Remember......we have MONTHS of 110°++ heat. The coldest it's been since I've lived here has been 24°..........and that would be equivalent to 0° for you Northerners(!)

Land's End- (there is a petite version)
I have this J. Crew one in turquoise, with Thinsulate lining, also in petites.

I own all kinds of coats, jackets. I find that 100 percent wool and cashmere blend and fake fur keep me the warmest. I live in central NJ. I detest puffer jackets. I still have my down and feather coat from lands end from 15 years ago I wear in snowy cold weather.

I'm 5' tall, living in Michigan and frequently have to be outside for recess as a subsitute teacher. My coat: The North Face metropolis. It's supposed to be 3/4 length, but functions as a knee length on me. The sleeves can be turned up too (I have short arms). This coat is very warm for this climate and not too puffy and works nicely over tunic tops.
I've had it for several years and it still looks good. You can wash and dry it(with tennis balls in the dryer for the down)at home. By the way, as a 600 fill down coat, it works in 40 degree weather, as well as -10 degrees!

@shoptheQ, If you work downtown, or can make a shopping trip to the downtown area, check out Macy's State Street (the old Marshall Field). The coat department there is bigger than any of the other local Macy's (other department stores in Chicago). There is an impressive petite selection. Trying on may be the best shopping tip for you. It's possble that a petite cut puffer (as long as it isn't too puffy) may look terrific on you. Other styles you may want to steer to would be like the Land's End Squall, Stadium coats, down coats with no puff quilting (not easy to find, but out there).
I can't imagine this Tahari version of puffer not looking good on a lot of heights, shapes and sizes:

When I do need a winter coat in the south, my choice is a shorter coat that makes it easier to get in and out of the car. Another must is that it's lightweight enough so that I can layer if I want to be warmer. Nothing worse than a very heavy coat going into a warm mall or grocery store and being stuck wearing my coat and working up a sweat or having to carrying it!
