I always thought a hostess is strickly female and a host was male and can be either.

I think my gender have taken this male/female a bridge too far. I normally would have said hostess, but since we are now into the MeToo movement and women fighting wars, men wearing dresses, I will just refrain from adding ess to the host noun in order to keep down peace from my sisters who choose to fight.

Since this thread seems to have taken a turn away from the original topic, male or female, regardless of the shopping channel, they are referred to as hosts. You never hear any of the females introduce themselves as a hostess.
